The objective of the orchestra is to promote, improve, develop and maintain education in and appreciation of the art and science of music in all its aspects, by the presentation of public concerts and recitals.
Membership is available to all musicians. There are over 40 members from various schools and colleges across the Northwest.
The membership fee is £4 per week for the Symphony and Wind Orchestras, and £3 per week for the String Orchestra. Discounts are available for 2 or more members of the same family.
The orchestras rehearse weekly on a Wednesday evening from 7pm until 9pm (6.30pm until 8.00pm for the string orchestra) at Ormskirk School, Wigan Road, Ormskirk.
The orchestras learn a wide range of repertoire each concert, with a themed concert at the end of the summer term.
Each orchestra led by its own highly qualified conductor.
The Symphony Orchestra: a full orchestra for the more advanced players of JOY.
The Wind Orchestra: an orchestra for wind, brass and percussion to train the players for the Symphony Orchestra.
The String Orchestra: a string orchestra to train the players for the Symphony Orchestra.
JOY creates a musical education experience and discipline, with the opportunity to make new lifelong friends. Over 80 hours of rehearsal are provided each season in addition to the three performance opportunities.
